DjC halo-halo of Tiwi

May 23, 2009

If by any chance you are in Albay, make sure to try DjC’s halo-halo in the municipality of Tiwi. Besides the grated cheese on top which makes it unique, the leche flan is very much like melted yema. I can still imagine it blending smoothly with the rest of the ingredients that makes one perfect fusion of sweetness.

The other ingredients are: corn, small sago, sweetened banana, and ube jam plus of course the finely shaven ice.

DjC is located at the back of Tiwi municipal hall, an hour and a half from the Legazpi airport.

Davao’s pineapple

March 26, 2009

Davao = Durian. Right. But I have discovered that Davao’s pineapples are the sweetest. From among those that I’ve tasted at least. I’m not really a fan of pineapple because I get oral pruritus when I eat them. I became a convert after tasting the fruit at the Pearl Farm.

When my new job sent me to Davao City I discovered that not only Pearl Farm pineapples are the sweet ones. I think it is a general rule in Davao.

This was among the desserts served at the Waterfront Insular Hotel at Davao. Even the pineapples served us during site visit at the city’s “poorest” barangay were so sweet.

Tara na, Biyahe Tayo!

March 3, 2009

Let us welcome summer with this song which, by this time last year, was a constant song in my head due to frequent trips to Corregidor via M/V Sun Cruiser II.

Ikaw ba’y nalulungkot
Naiinip, nababagot?
Ikaw ba’y napapagod
Araw gabi’y puro kayod?

Buhay mo ba’y walang saysay
Walang sigla, walang kulay?
Bawa’t araw ba’y pareho
Parang walang pagbabago?

Tara na, biyahe tayo
Kasama ang pamilya
Barkada at buong grupo
Para mag-enjoy nang todo.

Halika, biyahe tayo,
Nang ating makita
Ang ganda ng Pilipinas
Ang galing ng Pilipino.

Napasyal ka na ba
Sa Intramuros at Luneta
Palawan, Vigan at Batanes
Subic, Baguio at Rice Terraces?

Namasdan mo na ba
Ang mga vinta ng Zamboanga
Bulkang Taal, Bulkang Mayon
Beach ng Boracay at La Union?

Tara na, biyahe tayo
Mula Basco hanggang Jolo
Nang makilala ng husto
Ang ating kapwa-Pilipino.

Halika, biyahe tayo,
Nang ating makita
Ang ganda ng Pilipinas
Ang galing ng Pilipino.

From city to city,
Seven thousand and a hundred plus islas
Sa mahal kong Pilipinas
Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao ating puntahan.
Huwag maging dayuhan sa sariling bayan!

Nasubukan mo na bang
Mag-rapids sa Pagsanjan
Mag-diving sa Anilao
Mag-surfing sa Siargao?

Natikman mo na ba
Ang sisig ng Pampanga
Duriang Davao, Bangus Dagupan
Bicol Express at Lechong Balayan?

Tara na, biyahe tayo,
Nang makatulong kahit pano
Sa pag-unlad ng kabuhayan
Ng ating mga kababayan.

Halika, biyahe tayo,
Nang ating makita
Ang ganda ng Pilipinas
Ang galing ng Pilipino.

Nakisaya ka na ba
Sa Pahiyas at Masskara
Moriones at Ati-Atihan
Sinulog at Kadayawan?

Namiesta ka na ba
Sa Peñafrancia sa Naga
Umakyat sa Antipolo
Nagsayaw sa Obando?

Tara na, biyahe tayo
Upang ating matamo
Ligaya at pagkakaibigan
Kaunlaran, kapayapaan.

Halika, biyahe tayo,
Nang ating makita
Ang ganda ng Pilipinas
Ang galing ng Pilipino.

Tara na, biyahe tayo
Upang ating matamo
Ligaya at pagkakaibigan
Kaunlaran, kapayapaan.

Halika, biyahe tayo
Nang ating makita
Ang ganda ng Pilipinas
Ang galing ng Pilipino.

Halika, biyahe tayo…
WOW Philippines…

Strengths and weaknesses

February 6, 2009

I don’t know if some famous person in history is credited with this statement but it crossed my mind today……

“Stand on your own strength, not on the weakness of others.”

White flower

January 13, 2009

I got a call from someone just recently. I used to date this someone. But we did not get past the getting-to-know-you phase. Somewhere between Mega Mall and Ayala I realized I did not want to know him better. This is why.

He had this headache on the bumpy bus ride at EDSA and asked me for a white flower. No, not that part of the plant that in some species becomes a fruit. He meant another white flower. The species that belongs to the same family as BenGay, Tiger Balm, Omega Painkiller.

The issue was not so much that he’s a doctor who asked for white flower. Did he really think I have that in my purse?!!   He could have asked me for Paracetamol or Mefenamic Acid. But white flower?!!I

I don’t remember going out with him after that.
